In short
- Tillyard is an Ohio nonprofit corporation. One person, the president, runs it day to day, and a board of trustees oversees it.
- Post goes to 10602 York Rd SW, Etna, Ohio 43062. Each kind of message has its own email address, listed in section 4.
- Court papers are served on the company's statutory agent. An email is not service.
- Copyright notices go to the designated agent named in section 5. Requests to remove an intimate image have their own form and address.
- We are not a school, an employer or a public body, and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by any college, university, employer or government agency.
- We never publish our bank details, and we never ask for payment by email.
- The documents that govern the site are listed in section 8. The Terms of Use are the main agreement.
- The site is built with open-source software and fonts, used under their own licences. Section 10 gives the notices.
- If anything on this page is wrong or out of date, tell us at legal@tillyard.org.
If this summary and the full text below ever differ, the full text governs.
1 What this page is
1.1 Purpose
This page says who is behind the site and where to send things. Some countries call a page like this an imprint. Nothing requires us to use that word. We publish the page because a person deciding whether to trust a record, to tip, or to send a legal notice should be able to find out who they are dealing with.
1.2 Status of this page
This page is not a contract and you are not asked to agree to it. The agreement between you and us is the Terms of Use, with the other documents listed in section 8.
1.3 How this fits with other documents
- On who we are and where to send something, this page is the more specific document and governs. Section 37.5 of the Terms of Use sets the order among all our documents, including the sections of those terms that prevail over every other document. If an address in another document differs from the one here, use the one here, and please tell us.
- On what a notice must contain, the document for that kind of notice governs: the Copyright Policy for a copyright notice, the Intimate-Image Removal Policy for a removal request, section 32 of the Terms of Use for a notice of dispute.
- On when a notice counts as given, section 36 of the Terms of Use governs.
1.4 Words used here
Words that have one meaning in every one of our documents, such as member, visitor, staff, the editor, record item, hold, case and tip, are defined in Definitions. The words below are added for this document's own subject, or repeated from Definitions for convenience. If a repeated meaning ever differs, Definitions governs the meaning of the word.
- A statutory agent is the person or company that a business names, on the public record of the state where it is formed, to receive court papers for it.
- The designated agent is the person or office we have named to receive copyright notices.
- Service of court papers means delivering them in the way the law requires so that a case can begin.
2 Who runs the site
2.1 The company
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Legal name | Tillyard |
| Kind of organization | Nonprofit corporation, incorporated in Ohio (articles effective 20 October 2026) |
| Formed under the law of | Ohio, United States |
| Ohio entity number | 5702766 |
| Federal tax status | Not recognized by the IRS yet. We say nothing more about it until it is |
2.2 The name
"Tillyard" is the name of the website, of the service and of the nonprofit corporation that runs them. Whenever a document says "Tillyard", "we" or "us", it means that corporation.
The names of the areas of the site, such as The Shop, Tillyard Research, Pursuits, The Record, The Workbench, Notes and The Almanac, are names we use for parts of the service. They are not companies either.
The name may change. If it does, the organization stays the same, every agreement stays in force, and this page is updated.
2.3 The person
Tillyard is run day to day by one person, Chase Marcum, who is its president and one of the three trustees on its board. The president is also the editor of Tillyard Research, and at present reads every mailbox listed on this page except the two for complaints about the owner (section 4).
Staff accounts are held only by the owner and by people working for Tillyard under a paid contract. The board's trustees, who are unpaid, and sponsors also have console accounts of their own kinds: a trustee's opens the Board office, and a sponsor's opens only its own page. No member acts for the company. If someone who is not staff tells you they can decide something for us, they cannot.
2.4 The president's other business
The president also runs a business of their own under another name that has nothing to do with Tillyard. It has its own websites, its own terms and its own contacts.
- Accounts, records and standing at Tillyard are separate from it. Information about Tillyard members is not used for it, as the Privacy Notice says.
- A legal claim about Tillyard is a claim against Tillyard, and not against the president's other business.
- This page, and every document listed in section 8, covers Tillyard only.
2.5 What the company is sometimes taken for
Stated once here, because people ask. The page What Tillyard is goes through each point at length, and section 6 of the Terms of Use is the binding statement.
- Schools and credit. We are not a school, a college, a university or a training provider. We offer no courses and no academic credit, and we award no degrees, no certificates and no grades. We hold no accreditation and no licence or approval as an educational institution, and we do not claim any.
- Employment. Nothing a member does here is employment, and being a member is not an internship. Only the Tillyard Internship program is an internship, and it is unpaid. Outside the program, nobody is paid and nobody's work is directed.
- Tax status. The IRS has not recognized Tillyard as tax-exempt, and we do not say that it has. A tip is a voluntary payment to Tillyard, and we cannot yet say whether it is tax-deductible.
- Government. We are not part of, or approved by, any government agency.
- Journals and honor societies. Tillyard Research is a student publication. Its pages say exactly who read each paper.
- Background checks. A page of The Record states what a member did here and who confirmed it. It is not a reference, a qualification or a consumer report, and it is not to be used as one.
- Advice. Nothing on the site is legal, tax, medical, engineering or investment advice.
2.6 Tax numbers and other identifiers
We do not publish the company's tax identification number. If you need it for a legitimate purpose, such as a written sponsorship agreement, ask in writing at legal@tillyard.org.
3 Addresses
3.1 Post
| Line | What to write |
|---|---|
| Company | Tillyard |
| Address | 10602 York Rd SW, Etna, Ohio 43062 |
- Mark the envelope with the subject, for example "Legal", "Copyright", "Accessibility" or "Privacy", so that it is opened promptly.
- This is a mailing address. It is not an office that is open to visitors, and nobody is there to receive a delivery in person.
- Post is collected from time to time, not daily. For anything with a deadline, write by email as well.
- Please do not send original documents, identity documents, cash or cheques.
3.2 Court papers
Court papers for Tillyard are served on its statutory agent: Chase Marcum.
The statutory agent on record with the Ohio Secretary of State is the one that counts. If the record there differs from this page, the record governs.
An email, a message through the site or a letter to the mailing address is not service of court papers, unless we have agreed in writing to accept it. Section 36.3 of the Terms of Use says the same.
3.3 Telephone
Telephone: (614) 600-9020. We do not offer help with accounts by telephone, we do not call members, and we never ask for a sign-in code or a payment by telephone. For a copyright notice, the designated agent's number is in section 5.
3.4 Our addresses on the internet
- The website is at tillyard.org, and only there.
- Pages of The Record live at tillyard.org/r/, and codes are checked at tillyard.org/verify. The Trademark and Brand Use Policy lists the others.
- Email from the site comes from tillyard.org. Email from a person here comes from an address at tillyard.org.
- Members do not have email addresses at our domain.
- Accounts that speak for Tillyard on other services: none. Any other account, page or group using our name is not ours, even if it was set up by members in good faith.
If you find a website, an email address or an account that pretends to be us, tell us at security@tillyard.org.
4 Where to send what
A person reads each of these. Today that is the president. We do not state a reply time, except where a law sets one.
| If you want to | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ask for an intimate image, shared without consent, to be removed | The removal form at tillyard.org/removal/intimate, or safety@tillyard.org with "Intimate image removal" as the subject | You do not need an account. The Intimate-Image Removal Policy says what to include and what we do. This route has a time limit set by federal law, and it comes first |
| Report child sexual exploitation, or a member who may be under 18 | The report control on the item, or safety@tillyard.org | The Child Safety Policy. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 first |
| Report something a member wrote or did | The report control beside the item, or the public report form at tillyard.org/report | The Reporting, Enforcement and Appeals Policy. If you cannot use the control, write to support@tillyard.org |
| Send a copyright notice or a counter-notice | The designated agent in section 5 | The Copyright Policy lists the six things a notice must contain |
| Dispute or correct something: a payment, a record, a confirmation you did not give, a credit, a decision | The dispute form on the site, or legal@tillyard.org | You do not need an account. The Disputes and Corrections Policy |
| Ask for a refund of a tip | support@tillyard.org, or the dispute form | The Tips and Larger Payments Terms |
| See, download, correct or erase your information | Your account, or privacy@tillyard.org | The Privacy Notice and the Account Deletion and Data Export Policy |
| Ask about your information if you are not a member | privacy@tillyard.org, or the dispute form | The Privacy Notice, section 17.2 |
| Stop an email | The link in the email, or support@tillyard.org | The Email and Communications Policy |
| Report a security problem, or a message that pretends to be from us | security@tillyard.org | The Security and Vulnerability Disclosure Policy. The site also publishes a security contact file |
| Report a barrier, or ask for a document in another format | accessibility@tillyard.org | The Accessibility Statement |
| Check whether a record or a code is genuine | The "check a record" page at tillyard.org/verify, or the link printed on the résumé | The Record and Verification Policy. A genuine page is always at tillyard.org |
| Report misuse of our name, or ask permission to use it | legal@tillyard.org | The Trademark and Brand Use Policy |
| Ask about a larger tip or a sponsorship | The inquiry form at tillyard.org/support/larger | Nothing is arranged except in writing. The Sponsorship and Independence Policy |
| Send a formal notice of dispute under the terms | legal@tillyard.org, and by post to the address in 3.1, marked "Legal" | Section 32 of the Terms of Use |
| Serve court papers | The statutory agent in 3.2 | Not by email |
| Send a subpoena, a court order, a warrant or a preservation request | legal@tillyard.org, and section 6 | |
| Ask a question as a journalist, a researcher, a member of faculty or a careers office | support@tillyard.org, with "Press" or "Faculty" in the subject | The Trademark and Brand Use Policy, sections 14 and 15 |
| Complain about the owner | monica@tillyard.org or jason@tillyard.org | Goes to the board's other two trustees. Reporting, Enforcement and Appeals Policy, section 3.9 |
| Find a crisis line or other help | Crisis and help | We are not an emergency service. In danger now, call 911 |
| Ask something as a college office | support@tillyard.org, or the dispute form for a name or an entry | For colleges and campus offices |
| Anything else | support@tillyard.org |
If the site itself is not answering, every address in this table still works, because each is an ordinary mailbox. A simple page of these contacts is also kept apart from the main site so that it stays reachable when the site is paused.
5 The designated agent for copyright notices
We have named an agent to receive notices of claimed copyright infringement under section 512 of the United States Copyright Act, and registered that agent with the United States Copyright Office.
| Designated agent for copyright notices | Detail |
|---|---|
| Agent | Chase Marcum |
| Service provider | Tillyard |
| Postal address | 10602 York Rd SW, Etna, Ohio 43062 |
| Telephone | (614) 600-9020 |
| copyright@tillyard.org |
- Put "Copyright notice" or "Copyright counter-notice" in the subject line, or at the top of the letter.
- The agent receives copyright notices and counter-notices. A message about anything else sent to the agent may not get a reply. Use section 4.
- The Copyright Policy governs: what a notice must contain, what happens next, how a member can answer, and what happens to people who infringe repeatedly or who send false notices.
If this block and the one in the Copyright Policy ever differ, the entry in the Copyright Office's public directory is the one that counts, and we would be grateful to be told.
6 Requests from courts, law enforcement and other authorities
6.1 Where to send them
Send legal process and official requests to legal@tillyard.org, with a copy by post to the address in 3.1 marked "Legal". Court papers that begin a case against the company go to the statutory agent (section 3.2).
6.2 What a request should contain
- The name of the agency or court, and the name, title and direct contact details of the person making the request, from an official address.
- The legal instrument relied on: a subpoena, a court order, a search warrant or a preservation request, with its number.
- Enough to identify the account or item: the address of a page, or a public identifier shown in an address on the site. A name alone is often not enough, because names are not unique.
- Exactly what is asked for, and for what dates.
- Any date by which a reply is needed.
6.3 How we handle them
- We answer valid legal process. We check first that a request is properly issued, is addressed to the company, and asks for no more than the law allows.
- Federal law limits what a service like ours may disclose, in particular the contents of private notes and table chat. The Privacy Notice, section 15, sets out those limits and governs.
- Where the law allows and it is practical, we aim to tell the member concerned before disclosing their information. We do not where a law or a court order forbids it, in an emergency, or where telling them would defeat the purpose of protecting someone.
- A request to preserve records is acted on for the records it names. The Data Retention Schedule, section 17, describes holds.
- We do not act on informal requests for members' information, from anyone, including colleges, employers, parents and partners.
6.4 Emergencies
If there is a danger of death or serious physical injury to someone, an agency may write to legal@tillyard.org with "Emergency" as the subject, saying what the danger is and what information would help prevent it. We may disclose information without waiting for legal process where we believe in good faith that such a danger exists.
This mailbox is not an emergency service. One person reads it, and not at every hour. If someone is in danger now, call 911.
6.5 What we do not hold
To save time: we do not hold members' dates of birth, government identity numbers, photographs, voice or video, payment details, passwords in readable form or precise locations. We do not hold network addresses in readable form in our own database. Table chat is kept for 14 days and private notes for up to 12 months, unless they are part of a case. The Data Retention Schedule gives every period.
7 Money
- We never publish our bank details. Not on the site, not in an email, not in a letter. Anyone who holds a company's account and routing numbers can attempt to take money from it.
- Membership is free to students today. There is nothing to pay to join, to publish, to hold a record or to use any tool.
- Tips are not open yet, because Tillyard cannot yet accept donations. When they open, they are optional and are left on payment pages run by Stripe. The charge should appear on your statement as TILLYARD HOUSE. The site itself receives nothing about your card.
- Larger payments and sponsorships are arranged in writing, and are paid only against an invoice issued through Stripe. They give no ownership, no return and no say over editorial decisions, readings, records or anyone's standing.
- We never ask for payment by email, by phone or in a note, and nobody is ever asked to pay for a record, a title, a reading or a decision.
If you receive an invoice, a request for payment or bank details that claim to come from us and that you were not expecting, do not pay. Forward it to security@tillyard.org.
A tip is a voluntary payment to Tillyard. We cannot yet say whether it is tax-deductible. Tipping does not change your standing here. The Tips and Larger Payments Terms govern.
8 The documents that govern the site
The Terms of Use are the main agreement. The other documents each cover one subject in more detail. Section 1.4 of the Terms of Use is the full list, and section 37.5 of those terms sets the order among the documents: the more specific one governs its own subject, except for the sections of the Terms of Use listed there. Words with one meaning across the set are in Definitions. Every document shows its version and effective date, and earlier versions are kept.

8.5 Agreements made case by case
Some agreements are made for one occasion: the Standard Team Agreement as a project's members accepted it before their first session, the official rules of a particular round (made from the Rounds Official Rules Template), and a signed letter for a larger tip or a signed sponsorship agreement. Each applies to the people who accepted it.
8.6 Language
These documents are written in English, and the English text governs. Each begins with a short summary called "In short". The summary is there to help, and the full text governs.
9 Not affiliated
9.1 The statement
Tillyard is not affiliated with, sponsored by, approved by or endorsed by any college, university, school, employer, professional body, publisher, government agency or other organization. It is a private website run by Tillyard.
9.2 What that means in particular
- Colleges and universities. When the name of a college appears beside a member's name, it is there because that member confirmed an email address at that college on the date shown. It does not mean the college knows about us, works with us or stands behind anything on the site. It is not proof that the member is enrolled there today. College names are written in text only, and we do not use any college's logo, seal, mascot or colours.
- Employers. No employer has approved a record, a title or a paper here, unless a page says in so many words that a named person at a named organization confirmed something.
- Government. We are not connected with any government agency. Where a guide links to a government site, or a track involves a public record, the link is a link and nothing more.
- Publishers, indexes and standards bodies. Where we look up a reference number, link to a publisher's page or follow a published standard, we are using a public service or a public document. Its owner has no connection with us.
- Professional bodies and issuers of credentials. Where a member reports holding a credential issued by someone else, the page says "member reports holding" and, where the issuer has one, links to the issuer's own checking page. We have not checked it with the issuer and do not speak for the issuer.
- The companies whose services we use. We are their customer. They do not endorse us, and we do not speak for them (section 10.2).
- Sponsors. If something is sponsored, it is labelled. A sponsor's name on a page is not our recommendation of the sponsor, and it is not the sponsor's endorsement of any member.
- Student organizations. An organization's entry on the site is a record made by its members. It is not the organization's official page, and it does not mean the organization or its college recognizes us.
- People who confirm things. An outside person who confirms a member's record confirms that one statement. They have no other connection with us.
- Members. Members are not our employees, contractors, agents or representatives. A member who hosts a table, or who holds a title, does not speak for the company.
9.3 If you see a claim of affiliation
If a page, a post or a person suggests that Tillyard is part of, or endorsed by, a college or any other body, or suggests that we endorse them, that is a mistake or worse. Tell us at legal@tillyard.org. The Trademark and Brand Use Policy says what members may and may not say.
If you represent a college or another organization and believe your name is being used on the site in a way that suggests a connection, write to legal@tillyard.org. The Disputes and Corrections Policy describes what we can do, including hiding a name while we look.
10 Third-party notices
10.1 Other people's names and marks
The names, logos and marks of colleges, companies and other organizations belong to their owners. They appear on the site only to state a fact or to identify a service, and their appearance does not mean any connection with us or approval by them.
10.2 Companies whose services we use
We run the site with the help of other companies. The Privacy Notice names each one and says what it receives.
| What it does for us | Notes |
|---|---|
| Hosts the site and its database, carries its traffic, and runs the bot check on some forms | The bot check is that company's product, and using it is also subject to its terms |
| Delivers the email the site sends | |
| Checks text for safety | |
| Looks up scholarly reference numbers | Receives the reference number only |
| Takes tips and issues invoices | Its payment pages are at its own address, under its own terms |
| Sends urgent alerts to the president's phone | Receives a case number and a severity level only |
Each of these companies has its own terms and its own privacy practices. We are not their agent and they are not ours.
10.3 Services you may be sent to
Some features hand you over to a service that is not ours: a professional networking site, a video-call service that a table's opener chose, a publisher's page, an opportunity listing, your own mail or calendar program. We do not control those services, and what happens there is under their terms.
10.4 Open-source software
The site is built with open-source software. We are grateful to the people who wrote it. Each component is used under its own licence, and the notices those licences require are given here.
The principal components at the time of writing:
| Component | Used for | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Hono | Handling requests and building pages | MIT |
| Valibot | Checking what is typed into forms | MIT |
| SimpleWebAuthn | Passkey sign-in | MIT |
| jose | Checking the staff console's signed sign-in | MIT |
The full list, with each component's version, copyright notice and licence text:
https://tillyard.org/open-source.txt
The tools used to build and test the site, which are not part of what your browser receives, are open source too and are listed with the rest.
10.5 Fonts
The typefaces on the site are served from our own address and are used under the SIL Open Font License, version 1.1:
- Instrument Serif
- Instrument Sans
- Newsreader
- IBM Plex Mono
Each typeface is the work of its own designers and copyright holders, who are named in the notices above. The typeface names are theirs. Our use of a typeface is not their endorsement of us.
10.6 Standards and public sources
Where the site follows a published standard or uses a public source of information, such as the accessibility guidelines named in the Accessibility Statement, an open format for résumés, or a public index of scholarly references, the standard or source belongs to the body that publishes it. Mentioning it does not mean that body has examined or approved the site.
10.7 What members write
Papers, projects, notes and everything else a member writes belong to the member, or to whoever the member's own agreements say. We hold only the limited permission described in the Terms of Use and the Author Agreement and Licence. A paper's page states the terms on which it may be reused. If it states none, assume that all rights are kept by the author, and ask the author.
11 Our own rights
- © 2026 Tillyard. The software, the design and layout, the text we wrote, the guides and templates, and the rubrics belong to us or to those who license them to us.
- "Tillyard", the names of the areas and titles, and our wordmark are names and marks we use in trade. We claim them as ours. We show no registration symbol, because none is registered.
- What members write is not ours (section 10.7).
- You may link to any public page, quote from the site with credit, and state facts about what you did here. The Trademark and Brand Use Policy and section 24 of the Terms of Use say what else you may do and what needs our permission.
- Automated collection of the site's content, and its use to train machine-learning systems, are covered by the Acceptable Use Policy.
12 Notices that particular laws ask for
These are gathered here so that they can be found in one place. Each links to the document that governs.
- Privacy. The Privacy Notice is linked from the foot of every page. It says what we collect, who we share it with, how to review and correct it, how we respond to browser privacy signals, and how changes are announced.
- California residents. The notice under California Civil Code section 1789.3, including the address of the state's consumer complaint unit, is in section 38.1 of the Terms of Use. The provider is Tillyard. Post: the address in 3.1. Telephone: (614) 600-9020. Email: support@tillyard.org. There are no charges to members.
- Copyright. The designated agent is in section 5.
- Intimate images. The removal form is at tillyard.org/removal/intimate, with the one-screen Removing an Intimate Image: Short Notice. The full process is in the Intimate-Image Removal Policy.
- Children. The site is for adults aged 18 and over. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly allow anyone under 18 to hold an account. The Child Safety Policy and the Eligibility and Verification Policy govern.
- Commercial email. Our postal address is in every email. The Email and Communications Policy governs.
- Accessibility. The Accessibility Statement gives the standard we aim for and a contact.
- Where the service is offered. The service is offered only to people in the United States. It is not directed to people in any other country.
- Governing law. Section 31 of the Terms of Use says which law governs the agreement and where a case may be heard. Section 32 says how a dispute with us is resolved.
13 If something here is wrong
Addresses change, and a one-person company can fall behind. If a contact on this page does not work, or something here is out of date, write to any of the other addresses and tell us. For a matter with a legal deadline, use the postal address as well, and keep proof of sending.
14 Changes to this document
The version number and effective date are at the top, and earlier versions stay available. A change to a name, an address or another fact on this page is a correction and applies when posted.
This is version 1.3, in effect from October 21, 2026.
What changed in this version:
- Now says the copyright agent is registered with the US Copyright Office, and names the agent in section 5.
