About

About Tillyard

Tillyard is a free website where college students do research, build real experience and meet each other.

Who it is for

College students in the US who are 18 or older and have an email address from their college.

What you can do here

Pick what you like and skip the rest. You can leave whenever you want.

  • Study rooms

Study at a table with other students. A clock counts up while you work, and you can chat with the people at your table.

  • Write and publish a paper

    Tillyard Research

Write on a topic you choose. Students at other colleges who have chosen to read give feedback, an editor reviews it after you submit, and you can apply for a grant to fund the work.

  • Keep a record

    Your Record

Each finished thing gets a page that says what you did, when, and who confirmed it. Put the link on your résumé so a reader can check it.

  • Build a résumé

    Résumé tools

Write a résumé, see how screening software would read it, and draft the emails nobody teaches you to write. It all runs in your browser, so a résumé you import stays on your device.

  • Volunteer work

Log unpaid work for a charity or a public office and ask someone there to confirm it.

  • Guides

How-to guides, email templates and a calendar of deadlines.

  • Team projects

Start a small team or join one, with students from other colleges.

  • Messages

Write to people you have met at a table. Only they can message you.

Free, and run as a nonprofit

Tillyard is free for every student and is run as a nonprofit. There is no paid tier and there are no ads.

Tillyard is an Ohio nonprofit corporation and cannot yet accept donations. No part of a donation goes to any member. Donating does not change your standing here.

How donating works

What we're here to do

Tillyard is an Ohio nonprofit corporation, and its articles give it three purposes. This is what each one looks like here.

  1. i Charitable

    Grants for student research

Research usually takes money and a place in someone's lab. Our grants clear both out of the way, so a college student can chase the question they care about, in any field, without paying for it themselves.

We think more students doing their own research means more new ideas. Grants go to research by college students, as funding allows. Proposals are scored by criteria that are published before you apply, and nobody on our board, or in a board member's family, can receive one.

  2. ii Educational

    Learning by doing it

The student who runs a project learns the most: how to ask a question that can be answered, find good sources, collect data, write it up and keep going when it gets hard.

Everyone else learns from what they publish. The guides, study rooms and résumé tools here are free for every student, and they stay free.

  3. iii Scientific

    Research anyone can use

A grant project starts with a plan and ends with a report of what it found, including what didn't work.

Findings, papers and survey results are published openly, free for anyone to read, check and build on.

The name

In 1655, Arthur Tillyard, an Oxford apothecary, began selling coffee in his house on the High Street, across from All Souls College. Scholars gathered there to talk about experiments and ideas, and the group that met there is remembered as one of the roots of the Royal Society. Tillyard House is named after it.

Good to know

  • Tillyard is not a school. It has no classes, grades or certificates, and nothing here gives academic credit.
  • Tillyard is not an employer. Members are not employees, and being a member is not a job.
  • No college or university runs Tillyard or has endorsed it.
  • Papers in Tillyard Research are read by other students, and an editor reviews each one after it is submitted. They are not journal articles.
  • The college email badge means we checked an email address at that college in a given month. It does not prove that you are enrolled, how old you are or who you are.
  • A record shows what you did, and what a reader makes of it is up to them. Nothing here promises an interview or an offer.
