Tillyard House

What Tillyard House is like

A room full of students who are all working. You sit down, do your own thing, and the people around you do theirs.

What it is

Tillyard House is a study room on the web. Students from different colleges sit at tables and work on whatever they brought: a problem set, a paper, a cover letter. Nobody teaches, and everyone brings their own work.

It works the way a library table does. You are near other people who are working, and that helps you keep going.

The Hall is the main room. There is also a room for each kind of subject, such as The Lab Bench for science and health and The Reading Table for humanities. The Silent Library has no chat at all.

The study room drawn as a map, seen from above and to one side. Round and long tables with chairs and hanging lamps fill the floor, and small figures sit at them, each with a name tag and a clock under it.

How a visit works

  1. Pick a room

The Hall is open to everyone. Go to a subject room if you want to be near people who study the same things.

  2. Sit at a table

See the room as a map, in 3D or as a list, whichever you like. Other people see your first name and the first letter of your last name.

  3. Study

Your clock counts up while you sit and stops when you stand up. Only you can see your study time.

  4. Talk, or don't

You can chat with the people at your table. Choose Focusing and you hear no one, and everyone else sees headphones next to your name.

  5. Stand up when you are done

Your visit ends and you see how long you studied.

Before you go in

  • You need an account. You sign up with your college email, and you have to be 18 or older.
  • Table chat is kept for 14 days and may be reviewed.
  • You can report something you see at a table, and you can block a person.
